1.   Purpose

Before you can agree on how to reform the criminal justice system, you have to be clear what you understand to be the purpose of the punishments used.

Here, in summary, are the main issues.

1a.   Retribution

Otherwise called 'Vengeance' or 'Retaliation'. People often feel a need to 'get even' with criminals.

1b.   Deterrence

1c.   Rehabilitation/Reform/Correction

1d.   Removal

1e.   Restitution/Repayment

2.   Prison Reform

There are various bodies working towards prison reform in different ways.

There are also a number of faith-based approaches, which always attract criticism.

2a.   Burl Cain

Cain was interviewed in 'Metro' on 17 June 2009.

The wikipedia entry for Burl Cain is fairly brief.
